September News
September 29, Bakersfield race

Just trying to get some news by the Internet about the race in Bakersfield. This morning, I saw on a the Bakersfield Californian newspaper a very sad news about the race at Lake Ming. I copied this following message from the newspaper.

---------------------------------------------------------------- The Bakersfield Californian | Sunday, Sep 28 2008 3:00 PM Last Updated: Monday, Sep 29 2008 7:19 AM

An Arizona man died after his boat flipped at 110 mph during a race on Lake Ming Sunday morning.

Stephen Todd Rawleigh, 51, crashed at about 9:30 a.m. He was removed to an ambulance, where he was pronounced dead at about 10 a.m. Rawleigh was coming out of a turn at 110 to 115 mph when his boat rolled and flipped, coming to rest upside down, according to a news release from the Kern County Coroner’s office.

Rawleigh was properly outfitted with a racing suit, helmet and flotation device, and was properly restrained.

His boat was a flat-bottomed 19-foot vessel with a 427 Chevy engine. After the accident, the races at Lake Ming continued, said Kern County Park Ranger Mike Marler.

“It always does,” he said. “It’s a pretty big event.”

He said the races usually stop about 4 or 4:30 p.m., depending on how often the course has to be closed for maintenance or accidents.

--------------------------------------------------------------- I think that driver also named Steve Smith and drove k-11 The Force in the past. I'm not sure these pics are Steve Smith as the driver but he drove this K-11 in 1980. R.I.P. Steve

May 12, About the last KRR race...

Here a letter sent by Jeffrey Wooton on BP web site.

Ladies & Gentlemen: The intent of the PS-346 to run with the K's was to help the class fill the field and put on a good show. Prior to the event, I was contact by the two of the three teams in attendance of this weekend to step up and race with them. Before the first heat of racing on Saturday morning I met with John Guthrie, Skip Tuttle and Steve Sequeria to discuss lane assignments. As always, I offered to take the outside lane as to stay out of their way and not cause interference. Steve Sequeria stated he wanted the outside lane because he was still getting used to the race format and driving his boat. Skip Tuttle asked for lane 3 because it was his first time in the seat of the PS-66 boat and wanted to be sure everything was working for him. John Guthrie took lane 1 and the PS-346 boat assumed the remaining lane 2 position. John did drop a cylinder in the final lap which allowed me to make additonal ground and make for a good finish between the two of us. K-16 at 2:53:71 PS-346 at 2:54:37 K-66 at 2:57:08 K-24 at 3:14:65 I believe the times show that the PS-346 was not hindering the heat and in fact was running competitive in the heat race. The PS-346 had a hardware failure and was being repaired when the K Final took the water at which time the K-16, K-66 and K-24 battled it out. Unfortunately, both John Guthrie and Steve Sequeria hurt engines and were done for the weekend. I met with Skip Tuttle on Sunday morning and we decided to scratch the racing for Sunday because two boats do not make a race. Now to address the issue. The PS-346 has in the past run several times with the KRR class without issue. The PS-346 has in the past run and has never been considered a hinderance or a boat that has gotten in the way. However, the blower issue had never come up until this weekend. The PS-346 has never pretended to be a K. I have owned and drivin my own K-333 in the past in an effort to help Lance keep the K's alive. As an APBA Inboard Commissioner I have worked hours to be lobby and be sure that the K's were allowed to come back and run as everyone has seen these past few years. I am still working today on it. When the issue of the blower came up I made a bad decision to monkey rig a contraption to try to appeaze the rule. It was the wrong decision. I know what a Supercharger and Turbo is. I spoke with Dutch Squires, Inboard Chairman for APBA on Monday morning about the issue and it was decided to withdraw my entry for the KRR class for the weekend. It was the right decision because points should not be awarded if I am the 4th boat making a class legal and I do not formally make the class specification. I have run the past couple of years with the best in KRR: Dave Bryant, Tony Scarlata, Chris Kenner, Pat Eason, John Guthrie, Larry Dahloff, Wayne Heibert, Skip Tuttle, Dennis Rankin to name a few. It has been a pleasure. I want to formally apologize for this disruption in the racing community. I want to apologize if this causes offense to John Brinton, Duff Daily, Mike Allen, Dale Hernandez Jr, to name friends and racing colleagues on the East Coast who run and compete in KRR Nationally. And I apologize to Dave Rankin and Gordy Jennings who bring great equipment, effort and a passion to the sport which in my time has been unequaled. Jeff Wooton PS-346
